Esther Short Park — the heart of Vancouver WA’s weekend community life all spring and summer long.

Written by the Octomaids Team

We’re a family-owned house cleaning company that has been serving Vancouver WA, Clark County, and the Portland metro area since 2006 — that’s 20+ years of driving through these neighborhoods, chatting with our clients about their weekends, and genuinely loving this corner of the Pacific Northwest. This monthly events guide is our way of giving back to the community we call home. We hope it helps you make the most of your May.

Why We Started This Monthly Guide

Every month, our cleaning teams fan out across Vancouver WA, Salmon Creek, Felida, Hazel Dell, Camas, and over the bridge into Portland. In between appointments, our team members hear about weekend plans — farmers markets, waterfront walks, kids’ soccer games, and local festivals. We realized we had a pretty good pulse on what’s worth doing around here.

So we started asking ourselves: why not share it? This is our community. We’ve been cleaning homes here since 2006, and we genuinely want our neighbors to get the most out of living in one of the most underrated regions in the Pacific Northwest.

May is one of our favorite months in Clark County. The rain backs off (mostly), the farmers market is in full swing, and the region shakes off its winter hibernation in a big way. Here’s what we’re excited about this month — our honest, personal picks, not a reprint of every event on every calendar.

Local Note: According to Visit Vancouver USA, the Vancouver Farmers Market is Southwest Washington’s #1 visitor attraction, welcoming more than 500,000 shoppers annually. If you haven’t made it a regular weekend habit yet, May is the perfect month to start.

Our Vancouver WA Picks for May 2026

Vancouver has a lot going on this month. These are the events our team is personally looking forward to — the ones that came up in conversation, that a client mentioned, or that we noticed while driving through Esther Short Park on a Saturday morning.

Free Family Friendly

Vancouver Farmers Market — Every Saturday & Sunday

📍 8th & Esther Street, Downtown Vancouver | 🕘 Sat 9am–3pm, Sun 10am–3pm | 💲 Free Admission

This is the anchor of our Vancouver weekends all spring and summer, and it never gets old. The Vancouver Farmers Market runs from April through October right next to Esther Short Park, with 100+ local vendors selling fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, artisan crafts, and the kind of food you’ll think about on the drive home. May is when the spring produce really starts to shine — asparagus, strawberries, fresh herbs — and the crowds are there but not overwhelming yet.

Our team tip: go Sunday morning, grab a coffee from one of the market vendors, and walk the whole thing before deciding what to buy. You’ll find things you didn’t know you needed. Dog-friendly, too.

Free Family Friendly

First Friday Art Walk — Friday, May 1

📍 Downtown Vancouver | 🕔 5:00 PM onwards | 💲 Free

Downtown Vancouver’s First Friday Art Walk is one of those events that sneaks up on you every month. Galleries, shops, and venues across downtown open their doors for an evening of free art, live music, and community. It’s low-key, genuinely local, and a great excuse to explore the walkable part of our city. May 1st kicks off the month right — the evenings are finally getting long enough to enjoy being outside after 5pm.

Pair it with dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants and you’ve got a solid Friday night without spending much.

Family Friendly

Walk/Run for the Animals — Saturday, May 2

📍 Vancouver Washington Waterfront | 🕘 9:00 AM | Tickets required

This one is close to our hearts — a walk/run fundraiser along the Vancouver waterfront benefiting local animals. The waterfront trail is beautiful in May, and knowing your Saturday morning run is going toward a good cause makes it even better. It’s a great way to get the kids (and the dog) moving with a sense of purpose. Check the event website for current registration details and pricing.

Free

Family Fun Night in Salmon Creek — Friday, May 1

📍 Salmon Creek area, Vancouver WA | 🕕 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM | 💲 Free

For those of us in north Vancouver — Salmon Creek, Felida, Hazel Dell — this is a great local option that doesn’t require a drive downtown. A free community family night with activities and a neighborhood feel. These smaller community events are exactly the kind of thing we love seeing in our area. Worth adding to the calendar if you’re in that part of Clark County.

Did You Know? Research in environmental psychology consistently shows that time spent in community spaces — parks, markets, outdoor events — measurably reduces stress hormones. A Saturday at the farmers market isn’t just fun. It’s genuinely good for you.

Crossing the Bridge: Portland Picks for May 2026

Portland is right there — and May is one of the best months to take advantage of it. The city’s event calendar is packed, the weather is usually cooperative, and parking isn’t the nightmare it becomes in summer. Here’s what we think is worth the trip.

Family Friendly Portland

Portland Cinco de Mayo Fiesta — May 1–5

📍 Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Portland | 🕚 11:00 AM onwards | Admission varies

This is one of the largest Cinco de Mayo festivals in the Pacific Northwest, and it runs right through the first weekend of the month at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Live music, authentic Mexican cuisine, cultural performances, artisan vendors, carnival rides — the whole thing. The setting on the Willamette waterfront is beautiful, and the energy is genuinely festive. If you haven’t been, May is the year to go. Visit cincodemayoportland.com for tickets and the full schedule.

Our team tip: go on a weekday if you can — May 4th or 5th tends to be a bit less crowded than the opening weekend.

Portland Family Friendly

Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour — May 1–3

📍 Columbia River Gorge area | 🕙 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM | 💲 Free

This one is a hidden gem. The Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour is a self-guided, free art event that takes you through the stunning Columbia River Gorge and into the studios of working artists. This year marks its 20th year, with 50 artists opening 41 studios across the area. It’s the perfect Memorial Day–weekend-starter for people who want something a little off the beaten path. Beautiful scenery, genuine local art, and no admission cost.

Portland

McMenamins UFO Festival — May 14–16

📍 Hotel Oregon, McMinnville (45 min from Vancouver) | Multiple days | Tickets vary

Okay, this one requires a road trip — but it’s worth it. The McMenamins UFO Festival in McMinnville is genuinely one of the most fun events in the region, combining an alien costume ball, parade, live music, and expert speakers on all things extraterrestrial. McMinnville is about 45 minutes south of Portland through Yamhill County wine country. Make a day of it: stop at a tasting room on the way down, hit the festival, and come home with a story. This is the kind of event people talk about for months.

Portland Free Entry (most)

First Thursday Art Walk — Thursday, May 7

📍 Pearl District, Portland | 🕔 5:00 PM onwards | 💲 Free

Portland’s monthly First Thursday Art Walk in the Pearl District is one of the best free cultural events in the city. Galleries open late, wine gets poured, and the neighborhood buzzes with creative energy. It’s a great evening to combine with dinner in the Pearl — one of Portland’s best dining neighborhoods. The May edition tends to feel especially lively as the city comes alive after a long winter.

Best Bets for Families with Kids This Month

A lot of our clients are busy parents — we know because we clean their homes and see the evidence (the Lego minefield, the art projects, the sports gear). If you’re planning family weekends in May, here are the picks that are most kid-friendly.

  • Vancouver Farmers Market (every weekend) — Kids love the food samples, the music, and the open park space next door at Esther Short. Bring cash for the kettle corn vendor. You’re welcome.
  • Family Fun Night in Salmon Creek (May 1) — Free, local, easy. Perfect for a Friday night when you don’t want to drive far.
  • Portland Cinco de Mayo Fiesta (May 1–5) — Carnival rides make it instantly kid-approved. The food alone is worth the trip.
  • Walk/Run for the Animals (May 2) — Great way to introduce kids to the idea of community service while getting some exercise and fresh air on the waterfront.
  • Gorge Artists Open Studios (May 1–3) — Older kids who are into art will love the behind-the-scenes studio access. The drive through the Gorge is half the experience.

Free & Low-Cost Events This Month

Not everything fun has to cost money. Here’s a quick rundown of this month’s free or very low-cost options for Vancouver WA and the Portland area.

  • Vancouver Farmers Market — Free to attend (bring spending money, though — you’ll want to)
  • First Friday Art Walk, Downtown Vancouver — Completely free
  • Family Fun Night in Salmon Creek — Free
  • First Thursday Art Walk, Pearl District Portland — Free gallery admission
  • Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour — Free self-guided tour
  • Vancouver Waterfront Trail — Always free, always beautiful in May

A Note from Us: One of the things we love about Vancouver WA is how much of the good stuff is free. The farmers market, the waterfront, the parks — this city invests in public spaces that actually feel like places people want to be. If you haven’t walked the Vancouver Waterfront Renaissance Trail on a sunny May morning, add it to the list.

Quick Tips from Our Team

After 20 years of driving through this area every week, we’ve picked up a few practical things that make weekends run smoother.

  • Parking at Esther Short Park: The street parking fills up fast on Saturday mornings. The parking garage on Columbia Street is your friend — it’s a short walk and usually has space until mid-morning.
  • Getting to Portland events: C-TRAN runs across the bridge. If you’re heading to the waterfront for Cinco de Mayo, the bus is genuinely less stressful than driving and parking in Portland on a festival weekend.
  • May weather in Clark County: Always have a light layer. May can give you 65° and sunshine or 52° and drizzle — sometimes on the same day. The Pacific Northwest keeps you humble.
  • The UFO Festival: Book your McMinnville hotel room early if you’re planning to stay overnight. It sells out. Every year.

We’d also suggest: whatever you have planned this month, schedule a house reset beforehand if you’re hosting family or guests. Nothing makes a long weekend feel better than coming home (or starting it) with the house already clean.

Got a Big Weekend Planned? Let Us Handle the House.

This is the part where we mention what we do — gently, because we know you came here for the events, not a sales pitch. But it fits, so here goes.

May weekends are precious in the Pacific Northwest. The weather finally cooperates, the calendar fills up fast, and Saturday mornings feel like a gift. The last thing you want to spend them doing is scrubbing bathrooms or catching up on vacuuming.

The Octomaids recurring cleaning service means your home is consistently clean — week after week, with the same trusted team every time. No strangers, no re-explaining your preferences, no wondering if it’ll get done right. Our clients tell us the best part isn’t even the cleaning itself — it’s reclaiming their Saturdays.

If you’ve been thinking about it, May is a good month to start. We serve all of Vancouver WA and Clark County (Salmon Creek, Felida, Hazel Dell, Camas, Battle Ground, Ridgefield, Washougal) as well as the Portland metro including Beaverton, Tigard, Lake Oswego, and surrounding areas.
